Emergency Pet Care

Planning For Your Pets!

If you have to evacuate your home it is always best to take your pets with you. Unfortunately, that is not always an option. Many Reception Centres do not accept pets inside, but some do have an outdoor pet care area. Group Lodging facilities will definitely not accept pets. In case you are unable to bring your pet, alternate plans need to be made to ensure your pet's safety during an emergency.

If you have to leave your pets at home, make sure you have a plan to ensure their care. Remember a pet is safer inside, protected from the elements, with a supply of food and water. Decide on a safe location inside your house where you could leave your pet in an emergeny. Take into consideration:

  • An area that is easy to clean, such as bathroom.
  • A room where there is access to water.
  • Rooms without hazards such as windows, or large picture frames.
  • A room where there is access to a high counter in case of flooding.
  • Separate locations for dogs, cats, and small pets like birds and hamsters.

Ask you veterinarian what to do if your pet needs medication and you have to leave for several days. Keep an extra supply of medication on hand at all times.

Get a portable pet carrier for each house pet. Familiarize each pet with their carrier

Keep all vaccinations and records up to date.

Ensure your pet has a proper fitting collar, with an up to date license and identification tag.

Include items for your pet with the following emergency supplies.

  • dry food for at least three days
  • kitty litter
  • self-feeder and water dispenser
  • extra medications
  • food dispenser that regualtes the amount for birds and other small pets
  • a cover for bird cages

Put a sign on your door telling emergency responders there are animals inside and where they are located.
