These are general instructions to apply to many emergencies. Not all situations are the same. Visit the Emergency Preparedness Canada site for information specifc to each type of emergency.
- Try to stay calm.
- Check yourself and others for injuries.
- Use a radio to listen for information and instructions.
- Secure your pets.
- Avoid use of the telephone unless it is for a life threatening injury. Please leave the phone lines available for official emergency use.
- Put on clothing that will provide you with some protection from debris, such as broken glass.
- If the building you are in has been structurally damaged and is no longer safe, exit the building and do not re-enter.
- Do not light any matches or turn on any light switches until you are sure that there have been no gas leaks or flammable liquid spills.
- Do not turn off utilities unless they are damaged, or there is a fire. If you turn off the gas it must be turned on by a qualified technician.
- Avoid the use of elevators.
- Do not flush the toilet if there is a chance of any sewer lines being broken.
Water may be contaminated, so purify your water.
