The FVRD's Wood Stove Exchange Program is designed to encourage residents to exchange their old, inefficient, non-EPA certified wood burning appliances for low emissions appliances, including new CSA/EPA certified clean burning stoves and other qualifying appliances. The Program is operated at a community level through grants provided by the province.
New technology appliances are proven to burn 1/3 less wood, to reduce emissions by up to 70%, and to significantly reduce the risk of chimney fires.
FVRD residents who exchange their old, non-EPA certified wood burning appliance for a qualified CSA/EPA approved one, are eligible to receive a $250 rebate, providing that the old appliance has been rendered non-reusable and has been recycled at a scrap metal facility.
See the Wood Stove Exchange "Do-It-Yourself Kit" and contact the Program Coordinator for details. Rebates are limited and will be assigned on a first-come, first served basis.
Residents living within FVRD electoral areas and member municipalities (Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Harrison Hot Springs, Hope, Kent and Mission) can participate in the program.
To be eligible for the $250 rebate you MUST both live within the FVRD or within a member municipality, AND the wood stove exchange must take place within the FVRD or within a member municipality.
Expanded Participating Retailer List
As of February 15, 2010, the number of Participating Retailers will likely increase, as the Program will be expanded to include additional retailers (ex. select hardware stores, big-box retailers that carry appliances eligible under the Program).
The website will be updated as new retailers are added to the list of Participating Retailers.
As a result of this expansion, residents will have more options available to them when selecting a replacement appliance. To accommodate this change, residents will be responsible for taking care of all the Exchange Steps outlined in the Wood Stove Exchange "Do-It-Yourself Kit".
Wood Stove Exchange "Do-It-Yourself Kit"
The Kit was developed to guide residents through the Exchange Process, and to provide comprehensive step-by-step instructions. Some of the steps include:
- Permanently disabling the old appliance
- Taking "BEFORE" and "AFTER" disabling photos of the old appliance
- Delivering the old, disabled appliance to a recycling facility
Scrap Metal Recycling Facilities:

If you are interested in participating in the Program, please contact the Program Coordinator for details.
Contact the Program Coordinator BEFORE you start any work on the exchange to:
- Confirm eligibility
- Check rebate availability
- Get a copy of the "Do-It-Yourself Kit"
Contact your municipality or the FVRD (depending where you live) to find out if a Building Permit is required for your exchange. If a Building Permit is required, apply for one BEFORE you start any work on the Exchange, otherwise, you may be charged a penalty fee.
Most insurance companies require notification if you are installing a new appliance. It is recommended that you have your chimney inspected by a WETT-certified technician before you proceed .
Carefully follow the Steps outlined in the "Do-It-Yourself Kit".

Coming soon...
The FVRD will be hosting a few "Heating with Wood - Burn It Smart!" Workshops, designed to equip residents with smart burning tips. By burning smart, you save time, money and our local airshed from excessive smoke.
The first Workshop took place on November 5, 2009 in Chilliwack, and the second one will take place on March 4, 2010 in Abbotsford.
